"ps" problem with Solaris 9

I have installed Solaris 9 on a Sun Sparcstation 20 and I'm having an
odd problem.

The "ps" command is no longer giving any output but other process
commands, like ptree, work just fine:

# ptree | grep http
                22625 grep http
14812 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  25388 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  25389 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  25390 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  25391 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  25392 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  25393 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  25394 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  2634 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  2635 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
  2636 /opt/httpd/bin/httpd
# ps -efa | grep http
# ps -efa
#

both the ps and ptree comands appear correct:

# ls -alg /bin/ps
-r-xr-xr-x 42 root bin 5416 Apr 6 2002 /bin/ps
# ls -alg /bin/ptree
-r-xr-xr-x 42 root bin 5416 Apr 6 2002 /bin/ptree

I'm currently running the kernel patch 112233-08.

Does anyone have any idea why ptree would work but ps wouldn't?
