First, thanks to Darren Dunham for his help, as that pointed me to
the problem.
Second, thanks to Jason Santos as he was leading me down the same
troubleshooting path, one email exchange behind my email from Darren.
I'm guessing I botches a package or patch install, which resulted in
/usr/bin/sparcv7/ps being overwritten by the binary for /usr/bin/sparcv9/ps.
They are the same file size and permissions on my machine. Darren's
suggestion to run pkgchk against the appropraite package (SUNWcsu in
this case) revealed that /usr/bin/sparcv7/ps was in fact corrupt:
# pkgchk SUNWcsu
ERROR: /usr/bin/sparcv7/ps
permissions <0555> expected <4555> actual
group name <bin> expected <sys> actual
file size <24552> expected <32056> actual
file cksum <55630> expected <24600> actual
#
I'll go to my backups and see if I have a clean copy.
As I've seen from reading Sun Managers, the speed with which folks
here debug/solve problems is fantastic. Thanks to Darren, Jason
and others for their suggestions/replies.
